Artificial Intelligence is becoming an increasingly relevant part of our everyday lives. As defined by IBM, “artificial intelligence leverages computers and machines to mimic the problem-solving and decision-making capabilities of the human mind”. Industries ranging from healthcare to defense are taking advantage of this technology to identify and improve various insights and processes.

Neural Networks

What is a neural network? A Neural Network is the series of algorithms that processes the input you give an AI (ie. images), and outputs a response such as identifying what that image is, how many of something are in that image, etc.

Machine Learning

Now that we know what neural networks are, we can discuss how those networks perform what is known as “machine learning”. “Machine learning is a branch of artificial intelligence (AI) and computer science which focuses on the use of data and algorithms to imitate the way that humans learn, gradually improving its accuracy”. In other words, a program performs a function given some data and gradually gets better over time at doing that task.

Deep Learning

Deep Learning is a subset of machine learning that requires less human intervention during the training of artificial intelligence. All deep learning is machine learning, but not all machine learning is deep learning. This type of machine learning powers the most human-like AI. For example, “by playing against professional Go players, AlphaGo’s deep learning model learned how to play at a level never seen before in AI and did so without being told when it should make a specific move (as a standard machine learning model would require)”. Deep learning has made major industry advancements in the fields of healthcare, energy, hospitality, and more.
